Do you paint a picture of your life as happy and optimistic or as somber and sad.
It’s not what happens to us in this life but it is what we do with and about what happens to us in this life. Life is not fair. Never has been. Never will be. That’s just the way it is. So if you don’t like the hand that you’ve been dealt you have a right to complain all you want but that won’t change circumstances and it won’t make it better. It will make it worse.
Our lives are defined by the stories we tell ourselves and others. Good things happen to everybody and bad things happen to everybody. But it’s the story we tell that emphasizes the event.
We’ve all heard inspiring stories about people who have overcame hardships and difficulties. Those are the stories everyone likes to hear. They remind us of the triumph of the human spirit. On the other hand we all hear stories of gloom and doom from often well-meaning friends, loved ones, relatives. We hear exaggerated stories of sickness and despair. But all of the exaggeration of the bad brings more bad to your life. You get what you focus on. You see what you look for. If you are focusing on “how bad it is” that is what you are getting, more of “how bad it is”. If you are focused on the good that is what you get more of “the good”.
You can choose the stories you tell in your own life. You can choose to downplay the bad things and focus on the good things.
You can choose to put your emotions into the happy and joyful things and minimize your emotional words and stories about the bad things. We all have things we don’t like and things that happen to us that we would rather not have in our lives, but our lives go on. And our stories go on. The definition of what happened to you lies in the story you tell about it. When you change your story, you change your life because you changed the meaning and the definition of what happened.
Viktor Frankl, the holocaust survivor and the author of the great book “Man’s Search for Meaning” said
“Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
Mr. Frankl survived one of most horrific events of all times. He could have told a horrendous story but he chose not to. Somehow he found meaning in it and he chose for his story to be a triumph of the human spirit.
May he inspire us all.

The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful, we will be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so we will experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful, we will find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation, our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we will experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually, we will be able to stay happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances.
Usually we find it difficult to control our mind. It seems as if our mind is like a balloon in the wind - blown here and there by external circumstances. If things go well, our mind is happy, but if they go badly, it immediately becomes unhappy. For example, if we get what we want, such as a new possession or a new partner, we become excited and cling to them tightly. However, since we cannot have everything we want, and since we will inevitably be separated from the friends and possessions we currently enjoy, this mental stickiness, or attachment, serves only to cause us pain. On the other hand, if we do not get what we want, or if we lose something that we like, we become despondent or irritated. For example, if we are forced to work with a colleague whom we dislike, we will probably become irritated and feel aggrieved, with the result that we will be unable to work with him or her efficiently and our time at work will become stressful and unrewarding.
Such fluctuations of mood arise because we are too closely involved in the external situation. We are like a child making a sandcastle who is excited when it is first made, but who becomes upset when it is destroyed by the incoming tide. By training in meditation, we create an inner space and clarity that enables us to control our mind regardless of the external circumstances. Gradually we develop mental equilibrium, a balanced mind that is happy all the time, rather than an unbalanced mind that oscillates between the extremes of excitement and despondency.
If we train in meditation systematically, eventually we will be able to eradicate from our mind the delusions that are the causes of all our problems and suffering. In this way, we will come to experience a permanent inner peace, known as "liberation" or "nirvana". Then, day and night in life after life, we will experience only peace and happiness.

News
LONDON (Reuters) -
Iraq is more likely to slide into civil war than turn into a democracy, Britain's outgoing ambassador to Baghdad wrote in a leaked diplomatic cable, the BBC public broadcaster reported on Thursday.

William Patey's final cable from Baghdad gives a far more pessimistic assessment for prospects in Iraq than Britain has disclosed in public. It warns of the prospect of Shi'ite militia forming a "state within a state," like Hizbollah in Lebanon.

"The prospect of a low intensity civil war and a de facto division of Iraq is probably more likely at this stage than a successful and substantial transition to a stable democracy," he wrote, according to excerpts quoted by the public broadcaster.

"Even the lowered expectation of President (George W.) Bush for Iraq -- a government that can sustain itself, defend itself and govern itself and is an ally in the war on terror -- must remain in doubt," said the cable, sent to British Prime Minister
Tony Blair.

Describing the main Shi'ite militia, he wrote: "If we are to avoid a descent into civil war and anarchy then preventing the (Mehdi Army) from developing into a state within a state, as Hizbollah has done in Lebanon, will be a priority."

Patey did, however, also say that the situation in Iraq "is not hopeless."

The Foreign Office said it does not comment on leaked documents.

"Every day the capacity of the Iraqi security forces to manage their own security is growing," a spokeswoman said.

The view expressed in Patey's cable reflects pessimism that has settled among senior Iraqi officials as violence has increased in the three months since a new "unity" government took power.

A senior Iraqi government official told Reuters last month that "Iraq as a political project is finished," with the capital split into Sunni and Shi'ite districts and officials working to divide control of the country on ethnic and sectarian lines.
<!--

experience the loss of a spouse -; one of life's most stressful experiences, according to the
magazine Psychiatric Times.

While the grieving process is a natural part of life, people
who experience symptoms for more than two weeks may be suffering from bereavement-related
depression.

Symptoms of bereavement-related depression are like any other depressive
episode. They can include a sad or irritable mood, anxiety, loss of interest in activities
previously enjoyed, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, low self-esteem and changes in sleeping and
eating patterns.

As is generally the case with depression, bereavement-related depression
can have a significant impact on the health of the sufferer. In fact, according to a study
published in the February 2006 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the risk of death may
increase by 22 percent for men and 16 percent for women following the death of a
spouse.

Fortunately, bereavement-related depression can be alleviated through early
identification of symptoms and treatment options including medication, psychotherapy or a
combination of both.

According to a recent study that lacked a comparison group, the
results of Lexapro in the treatment of depression related to bereavement is consistent with the
anti-depressant effect of Lexapro.

"Without treatment, individuals who experience a major
depressive episode after the loss of a loved one may develop chronic depression lasting years,"
said Dr. Paula Hensley, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New
Mexico.

It is important for people who may be suffering from bereavement-related depression
to talk to their doctor about all of their symptoms and discuss potential treatment
options.

For additional information and a confidential depression screening, visit www.depressionscreener.com.
NewsUSA
<!--

ABC News: Stupid in America

To give you an idea of how competitive American schools are and how U.S. students performed compared with their European counterparts, we gave parts of an international test to some high school students in Belgium and in New Jersey.

Belgian kids cleaned the American kids' clocks, and called them "stupid."

We didn't pick smart kids to test in Europe and dumb kids in the United States. The American students attend an above-average school in New Jersey, and New Jersey's kids have test scores that are above average for America.

Lov Patel, the boy who got the highest score among the American students, told me, "I'm shocked, because it just shows how advanced they are compared to us."

The Belgian students didn't perform better because they're smarter than American students. They performed better because their schools are better. At age 10, American students take an international test and score well above the international average. But by age 15, when students from 40 countries are tested, the Americans place 25th.

American schools don't teach as well as schools in other countries because they are government monopolies, and monopolies don't have much incentive to compete. In Belgium, by contrast, the money is attached to the kids — it's a kind of voucher system. Government funds education — at many different kinds of schools — but if a school can't attract students, it goes out of business.

Belgian school principal Kaat Vandensavel told us she works hard to impress parents.

She told us, "If we don't offer them what they want for their child, they won't come to our school." She constantly improves the teaching, saying, "You can't afford 10 teachers out of 160 that don't do their work, because the clients will know, and won't come to you again."

"That's normal in Western Europe," Harvard economist Caroline Hoxby told me. "If schools don't perform well, a parent would never be trapped in that school in the same way you could be trapped in the U.S."

Last week Florida's Supreme Court shut down "opportunity scholarships," Florida's small attempt at competition. Public money can't be spent on private schools, said the court, because the state constitution commands the funding only of "uniform . . . high-quality" schools. Government schools are neither uniform nor high-quality, and without competition, no new teaching plan or No Child Left Behind law will get the monopoly to serve its customers well.

The longer kids stay in American schools, the worse they do in international competition. They do worse than kids from poorer countries that spend much less money on education, ranking behind not only Belgium but also Poland, the Czech Republic and South Korea.

Pop star Michael Jackson was spotted shopping in a Bahrain mall on Wednesday, hiding his face behind a veil and donning a black robe traditionally worn by women in the Gulf.
He was with three children, apparently his own, who also had their faces covered by dark scarves. An unidentified woman accompanied them.
The pop star, who seems to be settling in the Persian Gulf, was seen leaving Marina Mall in the Bahrain capital, holding a child by the hand. On the way out a back door, he shook hands with security guards.
The woman also dressed in the black robe called an abaya, jeans and a scarf that partially covered her face had the two other children. All three children were wrapped in black scarves and wore yellow shirts and sweatpants or khakis without robes.
Since his June acquittal on child molestation charges in California, Jackson has made several trips to Bahrain as a guest of Sheik Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the son of Bahrain's king. He reportedly was negotiating a position as a consultant with a Bahrain-based company that plans to set up theme parks and music academies in the Middle East.
<!--

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Romania discovered the bird flu virus in a village 90 km (60 miles) east of Bucharest, indicating that the disease might be spreading toward the capital, the farm ministry said on Tuesday.

Since October, Romania has found avian flu in 26 villages in and around the Danube delta on the Black Sea, where the deadly strain of the virus was first discovered 300 km from Bucharest.

"The H5 type was isolated in samples from domestic fowl from the village of Albesti in Ialomita county," the ministry said in a statement.

It said samples would be sent to a British laboratory to find out whether it was the deadly H5N1 strain. Around 8,000 domestic birds in Albesti are being culled and the village was quarantined, it said.

The ministry also said it confirmed the H5 virus type in samples taken from hens in the village of Stelnica, around 160 km (1oo miles) east of Bucharest, where avian flu was suspected last week.

Nine cases have been confirmed as the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain since October, and the ministry said it will send seven more samples from the counties of Ialomita and Calarasi in the east of the country to Britain to be tested.

H5N1 is endemic in poultry in parts of Asia where it has killed more than 70 people since late 2003. Experts say a flu pandemic among humans could kill millions around the globe and cause massive economic losses.

Romania, which has not registered any cases of bird flu in humans, has warned that migratory birds possibly carrying the virus were heading toward the country' southern neighbor Bulgaria.

The virus remains hard for people to catch, but there are fears it could mutate into a form easily transmitted among humans. There have been no cases in people outside of Asia.

The H5 type of the virus was confirmed last week in two villages in Ialomita county, indicating the avian disease could be spreading toward the capital.

Since October, the Balkan country has found avian flu in 21 villages in and around the Danube delta where the deadly strain of the virus was first discovered 300 km from Bucharest.

Nine cases have been confirmed as the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. But the disease has not appeared close to large cities and officials have said it was unlikely to break out there.

"Preliminary tests taken from several hens in the village of Traian show suspicion for the H5 type, but the virus hasn't been isolated yet," Nicolae Stefan, head of the Animal Health and Diagnosis Institute, told Reuters.

He said the village will be quarantined and all domestic fowl would be destroyed as a precaution.

H5N1 is endemic in poultry in parts of Asia where it has killed more than 70 people since late 2003. Experts say a flu pandemic among humans could kill millions around the globe and cause massive economic losses.

The virus remains hard for people to catch, but there are fears it could mutate into a form easily transmissible among humans. There have been no cases in people outside of Asia.
<!--

The Land of Mediocrity
by L. Dean
In the Land of Mediocrity,
surrounded by the picket fence of excuses...
I built my house.
The weeds of procrastination
and the brambles of slouth
take over the yard that will never be green.
Near the house are huge oak trees that represent
the giants in my life that I failed to confront.
Inside the house is the couch of comfort
where I invested my time foolishly...
an album of achievement is nearby,
but the pages are empty.
The air is filled with boredom...
and my eyes with tears of regret.
A waste basket near the couch of comfort
is full of dreams...never pursued...never to be.
The door to the house is that of opportunity...
the door I hesitated to walk through
for fear of the unknown.
Those fears still exist today...
but only, as then...in my mind.
Through the window of vision
that I failed to keep clean and clear...
I can see what's left of the bridge of hope...
now fallen down into the river of regret
which flows by daily... reminding me...
of all that I could have achieved...
of all the dreams I could have lived.
I, instead, have created my own hell...
somewhere...
In the Land of Mediocrity.
Go after your goals and dreams with all your heart...
be willing to do whatever it takes...
don't let these words become your reality.

<!--

"Background Studies that have shown clinical depression to be a risk factor for cardiac events after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery have had small sample sizes, short follow-up, and have not had adequate power to assess mortality. We sought to assess whether depression is associated with an increased risk of mortality.

Methods We assessed 817 patients undergoing CABG at Duke University Medical Center between May, 1989, and May, 2001. Patients completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale before surgery, 6 months after CABG, and were followed-up for up to 12 years.

Findings In 817 patients there were 122 deaths (15%) in a mean follow-up of 5·2 years. 310 patients (38%) met the criterion for depression (CES-D 16): 213 (26%) for mild depression (CES-D 16-26) and 97 (12%) for moderate to severe depression (CES-D 27). Survival analyses, controlling for age, sex, number of grafts, diabetes, smoking, left ventricular ejection fraction, and previous myocardial infarction, showed that patients with moderate to severe depression at baseline (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 2·4, [95% CI 1·4-4·0]; p=0·001) and mild or moderate to severe depression that persisted from baseline to 6 months (adjusted HR 2·2, [1·2-4·2]; p=0·015) had higher rates of death than did those with no depression"
<!--

Don't just sit by your Inbox waiting for an email from Cinderella or Prince Charming to miraculously appear. If you're really serious about finding a date, your soul mate or even a friend, the best thing to do is to stay active on the site, and that means getting out there and contacting the people you're interested in. This might seem scary to some of you at first, but remember, everyone at AmericanSingles.com is here to mix & mingle, and a simple note may be all it takes to ignite the spark you've been waiting for.

Here are some tips to get the ball rolling:

 * MAKE A PLAN. Set time aside every week to look through profiles, and keep a sharp eye out for new members that have the qualities you're looking for.
 * SET GOALS. Try to contact a minimum number of members every week (3 is a good number). But only contact the ones that seem interesting to you.
 * KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. Know yourself and know what you're looking for—and say it directly to those you want to meet.
 * DON'T BE SHY. Ask a lot of questions—this is your chance to get the skinny before you meet.
 * PAY ATTENTION. 'Listen' carefully to responses—they're very telling; ask questions if something bothers you.
 * GIVE EVERYONE A CHANCE."
<!--
